How old do you have to be to drive a truck in North Carolina?
To drive a commercial truck across state lines (interstate), federal rules set the minimum age at 21 (49 CFR 391.11). A driver aged 18 to 20 can hold a CDL for driving only inside one state (intrastate), where that state allows it; ask the North Carolina CDL office for its rule.
Do I need training before the CDL test in North Carolina?
Yes, if it is your first Class A or Class B CDL, or you are upgrading from Class B to Class A. Since February 7, 2022, federal rules require entry-level driver training (ELDT) from a provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry before you take the CDL skills test.
Do I need a DOT medical card to drive a truck in North Carolina?
Yes, to drive a commercial truck across state lines you need a DOT medical examiner’s certificate (the medical card) from an examiner listed on the FMCSA National Registry. It is valid for up to 24 months. For driving only inside North Carolina, ask the North Carolina CDL office which medical rules apply.
Which written tests do I take for a CDL in North Carolina, and where can I practice?
Every CDL needs the General Knowledge test. For Class A you also take the Combination Vehicles test. In any class, you take the Air Brakes test to drive a truck with air brakes; without it the CDL carries an air brake restriction (49 CFR 383.95). Practice General Knowledge with our free 20-question CDL practice test, in English or in Spanish.
